Chelsea are expected to sell several central defenders during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to comments made by interim head coach Calum McFarlane. The club anticipates signing a new centre-back before the 2026-27 season, necessitating departures within their current squad.
Chelsea currently boast ten senior central defenders, including Axel Disasi and Aaron Anselmino who are presently on loan. The return to fitness of Levi Colwill further contributes to an overabundance of options in that position. Benoit Badiashile and Mamadou Sarr were notably absent from the matchday squad for the FA Cup final against Manchester City, with Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato and Colwill starting, and Trevoh Chalobah, Tosin Adarabioyo and Josh Acheampong on the bench.
McFarlane acknowledged the situation when speaking to reporters ahead of their match against Tottenham Hotspur, stating that Badiashile and Sarr “didn't make the squad - we can use them in the next two games potentially. We have a lot of players in their position.” This admission signals the likelihood of at least one permanent departure this summer.
Colwill is considered a key component of the team, with his recent performances against Liverpool and Manchester City highlighting his importance. Xabi Alonso, who will be involved in transfer negotiations, is expected to build his backline around the England international. Fofana’s form has also improved alongside Colwill’s return, making him a likely retention. Hato has also impressed, and Chalobah provides a reliable rotation option, forming a core group alongside any new signing.
Chelsea are expected to consider offers for Disasi, Badiashile, and Adarabioyo, while Anselmino and Sarr are also potential candidates for a transfer. Acheampong may benefit from a loan spell to gain consistent playing time, unless Alonso intends to integrate him into the first team regularly. The club confirmed that Alonso will have a significant role in shaping the squad for the next season.
This defensive reshuffle aims to streamline the squad and create a more balanced team under Alonso’s leadership, potentially freeing up funds for other areas of investment.
