Chelsea have encountered difficulties in their attempt to sign Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria, with negotiations described as ‘complicated’ after weeks of discussion. The Blues have already secured the services of Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, and Emmanuel Emegha this summer, while also generating over €130 million in player sales, including the notable €55 million transfer of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.
Chavarria has emerged as a primary target to fill the void left by Cucurella’s departure, but an initial offer of around €18 million has been rejected by Rayo Vallecano. According to reports from the BBC, Chelsea are prepared to increase their bid to £21.2 million (€25 million), however, Rayo are reportedly resolute in their valuation, indicating they will only consider a sale if Chavarria’s €50 million release clause is met in full.
Despite Chavarria’s majority of professional experience in the Spanish second tier, advanced statistical analysis suggests his performance level is comparable to that of Cucurella, contributing to Rayo’s firm negotiating position. Chelsea’s interest is believed to be spearheaded by new manager Xabi Alonso, who initially received signals suggesting a more affordable deal might be possible, but Rayo are proving unwilling to compromise, with Chavarria still having four years remaining on his current contract.
Rayo Vallecano are in a strong financial position and are demonstrating an ability to resist offers for key players, similar to the established top clubs in Spain – Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid. Furthermore, any profit made from the sale of Chavarria would be subject to a 25% tax charge, as he was originally signed for €1.8 million in 2022, incentivizing the club to hold out for the full release clause. Chelsea remain hopeful that Chavarria’s desire to join the club will influence Rayo’s stance, but a breakthrough in negotiations remains uncertain.
