Chelsea have agreed to loan winger Jesse Derry to Sporting Lisbon for the upcoming season, according to Fabrizio Romano. The 19-year-old recently signed a new, long-term contract with the Blues before the loan move was finalised, with Sporting covering Derry’s full salary and there being no option to buy included in the agreement.
Chelsea have been active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, and Marco Palestra for a combined €57 million. The club has also seen players return from loan spells, leading to a focus on reducing the size of their squad, with Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George having departed so far.
Derry joined Chelsea in 2025 from Crystal Palace’s academy and made three first-team appearances last season. He earned a Premier League start against Nottingham Forest in May, a debut facilitated by then-interim coach Calum McFarlane, who had previously worked with Derry in the youth setup. The winger was unfortunately forced off with a head injury during that match.
Despite reported interest from clubs such as Bayern Munich, Chelsea were keen to retain Derry and assess his development through a loan spell. The decision to send him to Sporting Lisbon was aided by a strong existing relationship between the two clubs, with previous transfers including Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo moving from Sporting to Chelsea in recent times. Romano reported that Chelsea rejected offers to sign Derry permanently this summer, indicating his value to the club’s long-term plans.
The loan move provides Derry with the opportunity to gain regular playing time and experience in a different league, potentially accelerating his development as a player. It also allows Chelsea to monitor his progress closely while maintaining his contractual ties to Stamford Bridge.
