Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa has informed new manager Andoni Iraola that he is prepared to leave Anfield if he is not guaranteed regular first-team football. The Italy international expressed his desire for more playing time in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, stating he needs to play “more than a thousand minutes a season” to regain his form.
Chiesa joined Liverpool from Juventus, but has struggled for consistent minutes during his time with the club. He was previously linked with a return to Juventus in January, but then-manager Arne Slot blocked the move due to a lack of squad depth. Chiesa acknowledged the club’s reasoning at the time, stating Liverpool “needed me, partly for numerical reasons,” but reiterated his need for consistent playing time.
The 28-year-old emphasized his positive relationship with Liverpool, but made it clear his priority is to play regularly. He is open to staying and fighting for a place, but will consider other options if he does not receive sufficient opportunities under Iraola. Interest from Serie A clubs, including Como and his former club Juventus, is reportedly significant.
Despite a lack of consistency, Chiesa believes he has several factors working in his favour as he prepares for pre-season with Iraola. Italy’s absence from the World Cup means he will be well-rested, and his versatility – being able to play across the forward line – could be valuable. Iraola is known to favour players with a strong work ethic, a quality Chiesa possesses. However, he will face competition, particularly from the emerging talent of Rio Ngumoha, who plays in Chiesa’s preferred position.
Chiesa’s pre-season friendlies will be crucial in demonstrating his value to the new manager. A consistent run of appearances could secure his place in the squad, while a lack of opportunities may force him to explore options elsewhere. His situation could impact Liverpool’s transfer plans, potentially freeing up funds or a squad space if he departs.
