Legendary former manager Christian Gourcuff has refused to attend FC Lorient's 100th-anniversary celebrations this weekend due to an ongoing conflict with the club's president, Loïc Féry. According to L'Équipe, Gourcuff declined an invitation to be honoured during the Ligue 2 match against Paris FC on Sunday and will also be absent from a legends match on Monday, despite efforts from current staff and former players to persuade him.
The 71-year-old, who spent nearly 25 years across three separate spells (1982-1986, 1991-2001, and 2003-2014) managing the Breton club, confirmed his stance when questioned. 'I promised myself when I left (in 2014) that I would never return and I am sticking to it,' Gourcuff said. 'Everyone knows the story... It bothers me not to see the players on Monday, but we will see each other in a context other than the match.' The club stated it regrets his absence but confirmed his image will feature on a fresco unveiled at the Stade du Moustoir during the festivities.
Gourcuff's absence is directly attributed to his strained relationship with Féry, who has been president since 2009.
