Manchester City have experienced a significant period of change this summer, both on and off the pitch, following the arrival of new manager Enzo Maresca. The club has been active in the transfer market, completing several incomings and outgoings as they reshape the squad.
City re-signed goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday for a fee of £3 million, bringing the Manchester-born player back to the club five years after his departure. Charles has immediately been loaned out to QPR to gain Championship experience, with the club emphasizing their commitment to developing young talent.
The most significant arrival is midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £116 million, making him the most expensive English player of all time. Anderson, previously at Newcastle United, has signed a five-year contract and is expected to become a key figure in Maresca’s midfield. City also secured the signing of 19-year-old winger Mathys Detourbet from Troyes for £21.7 million, though he has been immediately loaned to Monaco.
Several players have departed the Etihad Stadium. Nathan Ake has joined Fenerbahce for £7 million, potentially rising to £8.5 million with add-ons, bringing an end to his six-year spell with City where he won four Premier League titles. Bernardo Silva has also moved on, joining Real Madrid on a free transfer after seven years at the club, playing 460 times and winning six Premier League titles. Silva described the move as a natural progression in his career.
John Stones has been released after ten years with the club, while Manuel Akanji’s loan move to Inter Milan has been made permanent for a fee of £13 million, triggered by Inter winning Serie A and Akanji meeting appearance criteria. Jahmai Simpson-Pusey has also made a permanent move to Koln for £4.2 million following a successful loan spell. Detourbet’s loan to Monaco is for the season, with an option to buy.
City are reportedly still looking to strengthen the squad further, particularly in midfield and at right-back, following Anderson’s arrival. The future of James Trafford is also uncertain after a season as a backup goalkeeper. The club has also been linked with bringing back former academy player Jeremy Monga from Leicester.
