Werder Bremen have secured the permanent transfer of Polish centre-back Oskar Wójcik from KS Cracovia, the Bundesliga club announced on Thursday. The 22-year-old joins Bremen after a breakthrough season in the Polish Ekstraklasa, with the club confirming his arrival on their official website.
Werder Bremen’s managing director for sport, Clemens Fritz, highlighted Wójcik’s performance in Poland, stating that he was “one of the standout players” in the league last season and that the club had been monitoring his progress for some time. Fritz expressed delight that the transfer had been completed and welcomed Wójcik to the “Werder family.”
Wójcik made his senior debut for the Poland national team in May, earning his first cap in a friendly match. His inclusion in the national squad reflects his growing reputation as a promising defender. He featured regularly for Cracovia, becoming a key component of their backline and attracting attention from clubs across Europe.
Head coach Daniel Thioune anticipates Wójcik making an immediate impact, commenting that the player “brings a lot of qualities as a centre-back” and can “start to play an important role for us straight away.” Thioune praised Wójcik’s development and his recent form in the Polish top flight.
Wójcik himself expressed his excitement about joining Werder Bremen, noting his eagerness to experience the atmosphere at the Weserstadion. He described the move as “the perfect time” for him to take the step into the Bundesliga, citing positive conversations with the club’s hierarchy and a favourable first impression of the club’s environment. The financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club.
The addition of Wójcik bolsters Werder Bremen’s defensive options ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga season, providing competition for places in the centre of defence. Bremen will be hoping Wójcik’s arrival will contribute to a more solid backline as they aim to improve on their performance in the previous campaign.
