Aston Villa are being tipped to overcome Liverpool in the pursuit of Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott this summer, according to former footballer Stan Collymore. The 21-year-old has been a standout performer for the Cherries, attracting interest from several top clubs despite missing out on a place in England’s recent squad.
Scott has reportedly resisted Bournemouth’s attempts to agree a new contract, leaving the door open for a potential transfer. Bournemouth are believed to be seeking in excess of £80 million for the player, reflecting his potential and the two years remaining on his current deal. Liverpool, under new manager Arne Slot, have been linked with a move, with a reunion with former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola potentially appealing.
However, Collymore believes Aston Villa should prioritize securing Scott’s signature, even suggesting they should “break the bank” to do so. He highlighted Scott’s ability to progress the ball and escape tight spaces as key attributes, praising his involvement with the England squad. Villa’s qualification for the Champions League is seen as a significant draw for a player looking to advance his career.
Collymore expressed doubts that Liverpool’s ownership, Fenway Sports Group, would authorize a deal for Scott, suggesting they already have sufficient options in midfield. He believes players like Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch should remain at Anfield, viewing Scott as an addition to the squad rather than a replacement. The former striker indicated that if Scott were to join Liverpool, it would allow Iraola greater flexibility in other areas of the team.
Recent reports suggest Liverpool have been making enquiries about midfield options, but Collymore remains convinced that Villa’s ambition and the allure of Champions League football could sway Scott’s decision. The potential transfer could represent a significant statement of intent from Villa as they prepare for a challenging season.
