Francis Coquelin has officially joined Stade Lavallois, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The 35-year-old midfielder signed a one-year contract with an option for a further year after his departure from FC Nantes. He had spent only one season with Nantes after previously enjoying a successful career spanning nearly 500 professional matches.
Coquelin began his career with Lavallois before moving to Arsenal at the age of 17, preventing him from ever representing the club at a professional level until now. He went on to feature prominently for clubs including Valencia, Villarreal, and Freiburg, demonstrating his experience across multiple European leagues. He was a member of the Villarreal squad that won the Europa League in 2020-2021.
Lavallois manager David Vignes had previously stated his squad was complete for the upcoming season, but the addition of Coquelin is seen as a significant boost. The player himself indicated that this move represents the final challenge of his career, signifying a desire to finish his playing days with his boyhood club.
This transfer represents a return to roots for Coquelin, allowing him to finally play professionally for the club he began his footballing journey with. For Lavallois, it brings in a seasoned professional with a wealth of experience to bolster their Ligue 2 campaign. The move is expected to provide leadership and stability to the midfield as they aim to consolidate their position in the league.
