Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has become a co-owner of CD Extremadura, a club currently playing in the Spanish second division, according to an official announcement from the club. Courtois is partnering with the sports investment platform NXTPLAY, which he co-founded, to acquire a stake in the club.
The investment sees NXTPLAY become a co-owner alongside current president Daniel Tafur, who will “continue to lead the sporting and institutional project,” as stated in the club’s press release. The move represents a significant injection of capital for Extremadura as they prepare for another season in the Segunda División.
Extremadura recently completed a remarkable fourth consecutive promotion, a record within Spanish football, signaling a period of rapid growth for the club. Courtois, who is currently preparing for the World Cup with the Belgian national team, may draw on his experience with another club he is associated with, Le Mans, for guidance on achieving further success and potential promotion to the top flight.
NXTPLAY’s involvement suggests a long-term vision for the club, aiming to build on their recent achievements and establish a sustainable model for growth. Courtois’s personal investment demonstrates a growing trend of high-profile footballers becoming involved in club ownership, leveraging their financial resources and sporting knowledge. This move could potentially raise the profile of CD Extremadura and attract further investment in the future, bolstering their ambitions within Spanish football.
