Rangers defender Leon King is attracting interest from several English clubs ahead of a potential move this summer, according to TEAMtalk. Newly promoted Coventry City are among the frontrunners, alongside Premier League side Wolves.
The 22-year-old spent the recently concluded season on loan at Ayr United, where he enjoyed a successful campaign, earning Player of the Year, Fans’ Player of the Year, and Young Player of the Year awards. Despite this success, King appears likely to leave Ibrox in search of more consistent first-team opportunities.
Relegated Premier League clubs Burnley and Wolves have both extensively scouted the versatile defender, while Championship champions Coventry City are also showing strong interest. Middlesbrough, West Brom and Portsmouth are also monitoring the Scotland youth international closely. King’s ability to play both as a central defender and in midfield is seen as a significant asset by potential suitors.
Due to King being under the age of 23, a cross-border transfer would mean Rangers would only receive minimal compensation, making him a financially attractive option for clubs. The departure of King follows that of fellow Rangers prospect Bailey Rice, who is also expected to leave on a free transfer this summer. The loss of both players has been viewed as a setback for the development of Scottish talent within the Rangers system.
Reports also indicate that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal for James Tavernier, though that transfer is contingent on other factors. King’s move represents an opportunity for him to establish himself in the English football league, while Rangers will look to reinvest any potential transfer funds into strengthening their squad.
