Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella has completed a €55 million transfer to Real Madrid, the club confirmed last week. The 27-year-old departs Stamford Bridge after four seasons, having made 163 first-team appearances for the Blues.
The move comes after Cucurella reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the direction of Chelsea’s project towards the end of last season. Chelsea’s hierarchy ultimately accepted the offer from Real Madrid, influenced by the emergence of Jorrel Hato within their own squad. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona had also been linked with a move for the Spaniard, but Real Madrid acted decisively to secure his signature.
Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is actively reshaping the squad, and Cucurella is the latest addition alongside Ibrahima Konate and Bernardo Silva. The club has also reached an agreement to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries following the conclusion of the World Cup.
Chelsea captain Reece James expressed his disappointment at losing Cucurella, describing him as “one of the best left-backs in the world” during a press conference ahead of England’s World Cup match against Ghana. James acknowledged the transient nature of football, stating that players move frequently, but admitted he was “devastated” by the departure. There is speculation that fellow Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez could also be subject to a bid from Real Madrid before the transfer window closes on September 1st, potentially signalling a significant overhaul at Stamford Bridge following a 10th-place finish in the previous season.
James also confirmed initial discussions with incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, describing him as an “amazing” manager based on feedback from others. Having idolized Alonso during his playing career, James expressed excitement about working with the Spaniard. He is currently with the England national team, where he may feature in midfield after playing there against Croatia.
