Mahmoud Dahoud is in advanced discussions with LA Galaxy over a potential move to Major League Soccer, according to Sky Germany. The 30-year-old midfielder is currently a free agent after Eintracht Frankfurt confirmed they would not be renewing his contract, which expires at the end of the current season. A move to Los Angeles would see Dahoud reunited with former Borussia Dortmund teammate Marco Reus, who joined the Galaxy in February.
Dahoud spent five seasons with Dortmund, becoming a key component of their midfield under various managers. He made 149 appearances for the Bundesliga side, contributing 15 goals and 23 assists before joining Frankfurt in 2021. His time at Frankfurt was hampered by injuries, limiting his appearances and impact, but he still proved a valuable squad member during their Europa League winning campaign in 2022.
LA Galaxy are looking to bolster their midfield options as they aim to improve on their recent MLS performances. The addition of a player with Dahoud’s experience and technical ability would be a significant coup for the club, particularly given his existing relationship with Reus. The pair enjoyed a successful partnership during their time at Dortmund, and replicating that understanding in MLS could prove beneficial for the Galaxy.
While LA Galaxy are currently leading the race for Dahoud’s signature, they face competition from other clubs. Sky Germany reports that Istanbul Başakşehir, managed by former Dortmund midfielder and coach Nuri Şahin, have also expressed interest. Several Saudi Arabian clubs are also monitoring the situation, reflecting the growing financial power of the Saudi Pro League and its ambition to attract established players. However, the close personal connection between Dahoud and Reus appears to be a significant factor in favour of a move to California. The potential arrival of Dahoud could further enhance the Galaxy’s appeal to other European players considering a move to MLS.
Dahoud’s decision will likely hinge on a combination of sporting ambition and financial considerations. A move to MLS would represent a new chapter in his career, offering a different challenge and lifestyle. The opportunity to play alongside a close friend in a growing league could prove to be an attractive proposition.
