Danny Da Costa has extended his contract with FSV Mainz 05 until the summer of 2027, the club confirmed this evening. The one-year extension was triggered automatically following Mainz’s Bundesliga survival, secured with a recent away victory over FC St. Pauli.
The 32-year-old defender initially joined Mainz on loan in 2021 from Eintracht Frankfurt, before completing a permanent transfer a year later. Since establishing himself as a regular member of the squad during the 2022/23 season, Da Costa has become a versatile option for coach Bo Svensson, capable of playing in both a back three and at right wing-back.
This past campaign, Da Costa demonstrated his importance to the team, featuring in 44 of Mainz’s 47 competitive matches. His consistent availability and reliability have been highly valued by the club, particularly during a season where Mainz battled to maintain their top-flight status.
Mainz sporting director Niko Bungert praised Da Costa’s dependability, stating, “Danny is reliability personified. To deliver consistently throughout an entire season and to be on the pitch in almost every game is a remarkable achievement.” Bungert further emphasized the value of Da Costa’s experience and composure, adding, “We are happy that we can continue to rely on Danny's calmness, stability and experience at Mainz 05.”
The extension provides Mainz with defensive stability heading into next season, securing a key player who has proven his commitment to the club. Da Costa’s continued presence will be vital as Mainz look to build on their Bundesliga survival and establish a more comfortable position in the league.
