Jonathan David is determined to prove himself at Juventus despite a disappointing first season in Turin, according to reports from Italy. The Canadian forward intends to remain with the club and compete for a starting role under manager Luciano Spalletti.
David arrived at Juventus with expectations following a successful spell at Lille, where he finished second in the scoring charts among players born after 2000, trailing only Erling Haaland. However, his debut season in Serie A failed to live up to the hype, as he struggled to adapt to Spalletti’s tactical demands and finished the campaign without reaching double figures in league goals. He made only one start after the return of Dusan Vlahovic from injury.
Spalletti has publicly questioned David’s assertiveness in the penalty area, stating he lacks the “ferocity” needed to consistently score goals. The manager has emphasized the need for a striker who can proactively create opportunities and demonstrate a more aggressive approach in front of goal. Despite these criticisms, David remains confident in his ability to turn things around and believes he can replicate his previous success in a new environment.
However, David’s desire to stay at Juventus presents a challenge for the club’s new sporting director, Giovanni Carnevali. Spalletti is actively seeking a new central striker, with options including Alexander Sorloth, Randal Kolo Muani, and a potential reunion with Vlahovic. David’s substantial salary of €6 million per year, plus bonuses, coupled with the difficulty of finding a buyer for another summer signing who underperformed, Lois Openda, limits Carnevali’s financial flexibility in the transfer market. It remains to be seen whether Spalletti will be satisfied with David’s commitment and willingness to improve, or if the club will prioritize bringing in alternative attacking reinforcements.
