Davide Ancelotti has been appointed as the new manager of Ligue 1 club Lille, the French side announced on Wednesday. The 36-year-old will officially be presented later today, despite currently being in Brazil as part of his father Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff with the national team ahead of upcoming international fixtures. Lille confirmed that Ancelotti will initially manage the team remotely due to his commitments with Brazil.
Ancelotti junior takes over from Bruno Genesio, who was relieved of his duties as Lille manager. The club’s president, Olivier Létang, selected Ancelotti from a shortlist of candidates that also included Stefano Pioli and Thiago Motta, demonstrating the high regard in which Ancelotti is held within European football circles.
Davide Ancelotti has quickly risen through the coaching ranks, largely working alongside his father. He has served as a key assistant to Carlo Ancelotti at several high-profile clubs, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Napoli. During his time with these clubs, he has gained experience in player development, tactical analysis, and match preparation, skills that Lille will hope he can bring to the French league.
Lille finished fourth in Ligue 1 last season, securing a spot in the Europa League. However, the club’s recent form has been inconsistent, and the board opted for a change in management to try and reignite their ambitions. The appointment of Ancelotti is seen as a bold move, signaling the club’s intent to compete at the highest level.
Ancelotti’s immediate challenge will be to balance his commitments to the Brazilian national team with his new role at Lille. He will need to quickly assess the squad and implement his tactical ideas, even from a distance, to improve the team’s performance. The club will be hoping that his arrival will provide a fresh impetus and lead to a more consistent run of results, potentially challenging for a Champions League qualification spot next season.
