Inter defender Stefan De Vrij is awaiting a contract renewal offer from the club, with his current deal set to expire on June 30th. The 31-year-old Netherlands international could remain in Milan for another season, potentially on reduced terms similar to the recently agreed extension for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
De Vrij suffered a season-ending injury against Verona, ruling him out of the Netherlands’ World Cup squad, and now his future is a priority for both player and club. His agent, Federico Pastorello, confirmed discussions are ongoing with Inter, but also revealed De Vrij is open to opportunities outside of Italy.
Pastorello stated that De Vrij has spent a significant portion of his career in Italy – eight years with Inter and five with Lazio – and is considering a move abroad. While Inter remains his preferred destination, the defender will not wait indefinitely for a suitable offer. A potential agreement would likely mirror Mkhitaryan’s, involving an annual extension at a lower salary than his current earnings.
Interest has already emerged from outside Italy. Greek side Olympiacos have reportedly made contact, while previous discussions took place with Simone Inzaghi, now managing Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia, regarding a move to the Saudi Pro League. Inzaghi previously attempted to persuade De Vrij to join him in the Middle East, and a transfer to Al-Hilal remains a possibility. However, De Vrij’s priority remains with Inter, where he has established himself as a key player since joining from Lazio in 2018. A swift resolution to contract talks will determine whether he continues his career in Milan or embarks on a new chapter elsewhere.
De Vrij’s potential departure would leave a void in Inter’s defense, though the extension of Mkhitaryan’s contract demonstrates the club's intention to retain experienced players as they navigate a period of transition.
