Maurizio Sarri has officially left Lazio after one season, with the club confirming the mutual termination of his contract on Monday afternoon. The announcement, made via a statement on the Lazio website, also acknowledged the departure of his coaching staff, wishing them well in their future endeavors. Sarri is widely expected to replace Raffaele Palladino as manager of Atalanta, with the move anticipated to be finalized in the coming days according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Sarri arrived at Lazio in the summer of 2023, guiding them to a mid-table finish in Serie A. Prior to his time in Rome, the Italian manager enjoyed a successful spell at Juventus, winning the Serie A title in the 2019-20 season, though his tenure was marked by tactical rigidity and fan dissatisfaction. He is perhaps best known in England for his time at Chelsea, where he won the Europa League in 2019 and implemented a distinct possession-based style of play.
The change at Lazio paves the way for the appointment of Gennaro Gattuso as the new head coach. Gattuso, a former Italy international and manager of Napoli and Valencia, brings a reputation for passionate leadership and a more direct tactical approach. The club confirmed that all arrangements are in place for Gattuso’s arrival in the capital.
Atalanta finished eighth in Serie A this season, missing out on European qualification. The appointment of Sarri represents a shift in strategy for the Bergamo-based club, who have been known for their attacking football under Palladino. Sarri’s arrival is expected to bring a more structured and tactical approach to the team, potentially solidifying their defense while maintaining their attacking threat. This managerial change could signal Atalanta’s intent to challenge for European places in the coming seasons, while Lazio will look to rebuild under the guidance of Gennaro Gattuso.
