Tottenham Hotspur are experiencing a busy summer transfer window, already surpassing their previous spending record with significant investment backed by the club’s ownership, according to reports in L’Équipe. The club, recently managed by Roberto De Zerbi, has spent close to £280 million on new acquisitions, exceeding the £247 million spent during the summer of 2023.
The influx of funds follows a statement from the club’s majority owners, the Lewis family, outlining their ambition to restore the club to a position of prominence and exciting football. This commitment has translated into substantial spending, beginning with the £52 million signing of Dutch international defender Jan Paul Van Hecke from Brighton on June 19th.
Further bolstering the midfield, Tottenham secured the services of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from relegated West Ham for £85 million. The club is also on the verge of completing a deal for Newcastle United’s Italian international midfielder Sandro Tonali, a transfer potentially reaching £120 million including bonuses. These moves signal a clear intent to rebuild the squad under De Zerbi’s direction.
De Zerbi, appointed on March 31st following a brief spell for Igor Tudor, had immediately expressed his desire to avoid another season of battling relegation, emphasizing the need for a team built to his specifications. His previous managerial role at Olympique de Marseille saw him become the club’s most expensive manager in terms of total transfer spending, reaching £260 million for 31 players, though success on the pitch did not follow.
Beyond these headline signings, Tottenham has also added Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka on free transfers. The club is reportedly pursuing at least two further attacking reinforcements, with Brazilian winger Savinho of Manchester City a key target, potentially costing close to £60 million. These moves suggest Tottenham are determined to challenge for a top-six Premier League finish.
