Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily backed in the transfer market this summer under manager Roberto De Zerbi, with successive years finishing 17th in the Premier League prompting significant investment from owners the Lewis family and ENIC. The club has shattered its transfer record twice already this window, completing a double deal for Mateus Fernandes (£85m from West Ham) and Sandro Tonali (£100m from Newcastle), totaling £185 million.
Former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood believes this spending signals a turning point for the club, opening up access to a higher caliber of player now that the club has demonstrated its financial ambition. He stated that the Tonali signing, and the associated increase in the wage bill, will attract players who previously may not have considered a move to North London. Sherwood predicts Tottenham can compete for Champions League places next season, despite their recent struggles.
De Zerbi is now expected to focus on strengthening his attacking options, with Manchester City winger Savinho heavily linked with a move to the club. The manager may also seek another striker, after Tottenham managed only 48 goals in 38 Premier League games last season. However, Sherwood suggests De Zerbi may be able to revitalize existing options like Dominic Solanke and Richarlison, the latter of whom scored 11 goals in a difficult campaign for Spurs.
Sherwood also anticipates potential departures from the Tottenham squad, particularly among the centre-halves, with the club now boasting seven first-team players in that position. He emphasized that De Zerbi is the sole decision-maker regarding transfers, which he believes will reassure Tottenham fans. Cristian Romero is expected to leave following the conclusion of his World Cup commitments, while Djed Spence is also attracting interest from other clubs. The club is prioritizing streamlining the squad to ensure optimal balance and playing time for all members.
