Martin Demichelis is poised to become the new head coach of RB Leipzig, replacing Ole Werner at the end of the current season. The Bundesliga club, backed by Red Bull, have reportedly decided to pursue a different managerial direction, according to Sky Sports. A decision was made by Oliver Mintzlaff, Jürgen Klopp and Mario Gomez to appoint the Argentine.
Werner successfully guided Leipzig back into the Champions League, fulfilling a key objective for the club, but it appears this was not enough to secure his long-term future. The change in leadership comes despite a relatively positive campaign under Werner’s guidance.
Demichelis, a former defender for FC Bayern Munich, has emerged as the leading candidate in the search for a new coach. While his recent spell at Real Mallorca ended in relegation from LaLiga, he did oversee a significant upturn in form after taking charge, accumulating 18 points from 12 matches. Reports from Spain indicate he is currently finalising his departure from the Spanish club.
Prior to his time at Mallorca, Demichelis enjoyed success as a manager with River Plate, where he won the Argentine Primera División title. He also had a stint with CF Monterrey in Mexico. As a player, Demichelis was a four-time Bundesliga champion with Bayern Munich, adding considerable experience and familiarity with German football to his credentials. He made over 100 appearances for the Bavarian giants.
The appointment of Demichelis represents a shift in managerial approach for Leipzig, potentially signalling a desire for a more proactive and attacking style of play. His experience both in Germany and with developing teams could prove valuable as Leipzig look to establish themselves as consistent contenders in the Bundesliga and Champions League.
