RB Leipzig are considering an approach for RCD Mallorca manager Martin Demichelis, with a reported release clause of €2.5 million, according to Sky Germany. The potential move comes amid increasing scrutiny of current Leipzig head coach Ole Werner, whose position is described as precarious despite completing only one full season in charge.
Demichelis, 45, has overseen a mixed spell at Mallorca, securing five wins, three draws, and four defeats in 12 La Liga matches since taking the reins. Prior to joining Mallorca, Demichelis managed Argentinian side River Plate, where he won the Argentine Primera División in 2023. His managerial career began with Bayern Munich II, offering him experience within a prominent European football structure.
Sky Germany reports that while Demichelis is Leipzig’s top candidate to replace Werner, a deal is not yet finalized and negotiations remain at an early stage. The release clause has not been triggered, but Leipzig are prepared to pay the €2.5 million fee to secure his services. Werner’s future is currently under review by the Red Bull hierarchy, with a decision anticipated in the coming days.
The situation at Leipzig reflects a period of instability following a season that did not meet expectations. Despite reaching the Champions League knockout stages, the club’s Bundesliga form has been inconsistent, leading to questions about Werner’s tactical approach and ability to consistently deliver results. Leipzig currently sit fourth in the Bundesliga table.
Should Werner be dismissed, Demichelis’ appointment would represent a shift in managerial direction for Leipzig, bringing in a coach with experience in both Argentina and Germany. His tactical flexibility and ability to develop young players could align with the club’s long-term vision, potentially strengthening their position as a consistent challenger in the Bundesliga and European competitions.
