Ivory Coast winger Yan Diomande has publicly expressed a long-held affection for an unnamed club, potentially altering Liverpool’s summer transfer strategy. The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakout season with RB Leipzig, scoring 13 goals and providing 10 assists in the Bundesliga, attracting interest from top European clubs including Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain.
Speaking ahead of international duty with his national team, Diomande stated, “It's a team I've loved since I was little, but I'm not thinking about the future, I'm staying focused on the World Cup, we'll see what happens after that,” according to comments relayed by L’Equipe. This statement comes after Diomande previously indicated a desire to play for Liverpool, citing his father’s fondness for the club in an interview with BILD in March: “I want to play at Anfield, I want to play for Liverpool. I’m a big fan of Liverpool…to fulfil my father’s dream is a dream for me too.”
Despite the recent comments, a transfer is far from certain, and Liverpool remain firmly interested in acquiring the talented winger, potentially spending over €100 million to secure his services. Sky Sport Deutschland reported on Tuesday that Diomande has not yet committed his future to either Liverpool or PSG, keeping the competition open. However, RB Leipzig, guided by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in his role as head of global soccer at Red Bull, are determined to retain Diomande for at least another season.
Diomande’s appeal stems from his unique dribbling ability and willingness to take on defenders, a skillset increasingly rare in modern football. Javier Pastore, agent of Enzo Fernandez, highlighted the decline in dribbling skills among young players, making Diomande’s talent particularly valuable. SciSports analysis also reveals stylistic similarities between Diomande and existing PSG players such as Desire Doue, Bradley Barcola, and Ibrahim Mbaye, explaining the French club’s interest.
PSG’s pursuit of Diomande could also indirectly benefit Liverpool, as Barcola’s potential departure from the Parc des Princes could open the door for a move to Anfield. Liverpool are seeking a replacement for Luis Diaz, who was sold to Bayern Munich last summer, and Diomande fits the profile of a dynamic winger. Overcoming Leipzig’s resolve, however, will require a substantial offer or a significant shift in circumstances.
