Bologna are set to appoint Domenico Tedesco as their new manager, with an official announcement expected imminently. The 40-year-old Italian, born in Calabria but raised in Germany, has agreed to a contract with the Serie A club until 2028, with an option for a further year until 2029.
Tedesco most recently managed Fenerbahçe, where he won the Turkish Cup in 2025, and previously led RB Leipzig to DFB-Pokal success in 2022. He also served as the head coach of the Belgian national team, guiding them to the round of 16 at Euro 2024 where they were eliminated by France. His appointment follows the departure of Vincenzo Italiano, who guided Bologna to Coppa Italia victory last season.
According to reports, initial contact between Bologna and Tedesco began at the end of April, with the club considering several other candidates. These included Eusebio Di Francesco, Daniele De Rossi, and Fabio Grosso, but Tedesco emerged as the preferred choice, particularly favoured by Bologna’s sporting director Giovanni Sartori. Grosso ultimately chose to join Fiorentina, reportedly influenced by the presence of Paratici.
Tedesco has spent his entire managerial career outside of Italy, beginning with Erzgebirge Aue before spells at Schalke 04, Spartak Moscow and Leipzig. His time with Belgium saw him oversee a ‘golden generation’ of players. He was dismissed from Fenerbahçe in April following a defeat to Galatasaray, opening the door for a move to Bologna.
Tedesco is fluent in six languages and is a known admirer of Italian singer Lucio Dalla. He has previously stated his emotional connection to Dalla’s song “Stella di mare.” He is expected to implement a 4-2-3-1 formation, similar to that favoured by Italiano, while aiming to maintain Bologna’s momentum and secure further European qualification.
In a separate announcement, Bologna confirmed the contract renewal of Juan Miranda until 2028, rewarding the left-back for his strong performances since joining the club on a free transfer two years ago.
