Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka on a free transfer, effective July 1st. The 35-year-old Slovakian international will join the North London club following the expiration of his contract with Burnley.
Dubravka expressed his excitement about the move, stating he is eager to begin a “new journey” with his family. He highlighted his familiarity with manager Roberto De Zerbi’s coaching style and the passionate Tottenham fanbase, noting he has followed De Zerbi’s teams for several years. The goalkeeper also emphasized the club’s stature within the Premier League.
Tottenham’s sporting director, Johan Lange, welcomed Dubravka, praising his “proven quality” at the highest level and his character. Lange believes Dubravka’s professionalism will strengthen the squad, adding that his experience and leadership align with the club’s ongoing development. De Zerbi echoed these sentiments, stating Dubravka possesses important qualities and will bring leadership and a competitive spirit to the dressing room.
Dubravka began his professional career with Žilina in Slovakia before moving to Czech Republic with Slovan Liberec. He then spent time in Denmark with Esbjerg before joining Newcastle United in 2018, initially on loan. He established himself as a key player for Newcastle, making over 100 appearances across all competitions. Following Newcastle’s signing of Nick Pope, Dubravka moved to Manchester United on loan in the 2022-23 season, before joining Burnley last summer.
The arrival of Dubravka is expected to impact the future of current Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. According to reports, Vicario may find himself with limited playing time and could be subject to a transfer. Juventus are reportedly monitoring Vicario as a potential solution to their own goalkeeping needs, as they search for a new number one.
The signing of an experienced goalkeeper like Dubravka provides Tottenham with added depth and competition in a crucial position, potentially solidifying their defensive options for the upcoming season. This move signals Tottenham’s intent to build a competitive squad under De Zerbi.
