Paulo Dybala has indicated that his upcoming Rome derby match against Lazio may be his final appearance for the club, stating the organization has not approached him regarding a contract renewal. Speaking after Roma’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Parma on Friday, Dybala expressed uncertainty about his future, noting his current contract concludes after two more matches. “That against Lazio will probably be my last match at the Olimpico with the Roma shirt,” he said, adding that he is currently unaware of what the future holds.
The Argentinian forward revealed he had been anticipating contact from the club’s ownership, but no offer has materialized despite his willingness to negotiate a reduced salary. Boca Juniors are reportedly keen to secure Dybala’s return to Argentina, adding further complexity to the situation. Despite the uncertainty, Dybala remains focused on Roma’s push for a Champions League spot, emphasizing the team’s determination to succeed.
Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini acknowledged Dybala’s comments, suggesting there is still time for a resolution before the derby. He praised Dybala’s performance against Parma, highlighting the quality he brings to the team, and expressed regret over the player’s frequent absences due to injury this season. Gasperini admitted he had hoped for a more impactful season from Dybala, believing he could have been a key player.
Gasperini also revealed an interesting tactical maneuver regarding a penalty during the match. He explained that Dybala was instructed to take the penalty to draw attention and create a distraction, allowing teammate Malen to ultimately take and score the crucial spot-kick. The manager praised Malen’s integration into the squad, noting his positive attitude and impact on the team. Roma’s potential qualification for the Champions League would provide a financial boost for the club, potentially aiding in future transfer dealings, but the immediate concern remains Dybala’s future.
