Edin Dzeko, currently playing for Schalke 04 after a short spell with Fiorentina, has spoken candidly about his career, Italy’s recent struggles in international football, and the success of his former club Inter Milan. The 40-year-old striker detailed a period of considering retirement while at Fiorentina due to a lack of playing time and a chaotic team environment, but ultimately opted to continue his career in Germany’s Bundesliga 2, helping Schalke 04 secure promotion.
Dzeko’s move to Schalke 04 in January proved successful, culminating in celebrations in Costa del Sol after the club’s promotion. He also recently experienced a significant moment with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, celebrating their qualification for the World Cup – their first since 2014 – with supporters from all ethnic groups in Sarajevo. The veteran forward remains undecided about his future beyond his current contract with Schalke, stating he will discuss options with the club.
He expressed surprise at Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, attributing it to excessive pressure and a lack of focus on Bosnia’s strengths. Dzeko believes Italy’s media contributed to the pressure by focusing on potential difficulties in Zenica, rather than analyzing the Bosnian team’s talent. He maintains that Italy is the stronger side, and the result was influenced by Bastoni’s red card.
Dzeko also reflected on his time at Inter Milan, praising the club’s current success and the work of coach Cristian Chivu. He believes Inter is already at a high level and only requires minor adjustments to become more competitive in Europe. He highlighted two young Bosnian players, Muharemovic and Alajbegovic, as potential future stars, suggesting Muharemovic would be a good fit for Inter, and advising Alajbegovic to choose a club where he can gain consistent playing time. Finally, he voiced his support for his former club Roma, hoping they will qualify for the Champions League under the leadership of Daniele De Rossi.
Dzeko emphasized the importance of continuous physical care in maintaining his longevity as a professional footballer, stating he will continue playing as long as he feels he can contribute to his team.
