Junior Dina Ebimbe is poised to leave Eintracht Frankfurt permanently to join Bundesliga rivals Schalke 04. The transfer, reportedly valued at just over one million euros, marks the end of a frustrating spell for the 25-year-old at Frankfurt, where he ultimately failed to live up to expectations.
Ebimbe initially showcased his potential with a standout performance against Bayern Munich in 2023, scoring twice in a memorable 5-1 victory. That match highlighted his power, dribbling ability, and finishing, leading then-Eintracht sporting director Markus Krösche to praise his versatility, dynamism, and intelligence. He had previously trained alongside Neymar and Messi at Paris Saint-Germain, but was deemed surplus to requirements at the French club.
Despite being signed permanently by Frankfurt for 6.5 million euros in 2023/24, and contributing 15 goal involvements that season, Ebimbe never cemented a starting position. Tactical deficiencies and a lack of consistent playing time hindered his development, with his versatility often leading to him being deployed in multiple positions. A loan spell at Brest in Ligue 1 followed, but proved unsuccessful as he struggled to make an impact in a team positioned in the lower reaches of the table.
Ebimbe’s issues extended beyond the pitch, as he revealed in a May interview with Bild that he had surrounded himself with the wrong people and been exploited. He alluded to unspecified incidents that led to him being excluded from the Frankfurt squad and training sessions for extended periods. A potential return to Frankfurt under new coach Adi Hütter, who had previously attempted to sign him for Monaco in winter 2024, was ruled out, indicating the severity of the issues.
Now, Ebimbe will seek a fresh start at Schalke, hoping to finally fulfill his potential. He has stated his intention to return as a “new person,” and Schalke will be hoping he can deliver on that promise. The move represents a final opportunity for Ebimbe to establish himself as a key player in the Bundesliga.
