Ederson has extended his contract with Atalanta until June 30, 2031, the club announced on their official website. The 27-year-old Brazilian midfielder’s new deal solidifies his future with the Serie A side after a potential transfer to Manchester United fell through at the last minute.
Ederson was reportedly on the verge of joining United, having even completed a medical with the Premier League club, but the move was halted due to a meniscus issue discovered during further checks. Negotiations between Atalanta and United had reached an agreement, with a fee of €45 million proposed and Ederson expected to sign a five-year contract worth €5 million per season. Atalanta consistently maintained there were no underlying physical issues contributing to the breakdown in negotiations.
Since arriving at Atalanta four years ago, Ederson has become a key figure, making 180 appearances across all competitions and contributing 16 goals and 6 assists. He played a significant role in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph on May 22, 2024, and his consistent performances have earned him international recognition with the Brazilian national team, including recent participation in the FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying matches.
The club’s statement highlighted the Percassi family, Stephen Pagliuca, and the sporting director’s belief in Ederson, wishing him continued success both personally and with the team. This contract extension demonstrates Atalanta’s commitment to retaining key players and building for the future, despite interest from larger European clubs. The move allows coach Gian Piero Gasperini to continue building his midfield around a player he clearly trusts.
Ederson’s recent form with both Atalanta and Brazil has established him as a dynamic and influential midfielder, capable of contributing both defensively and offensively. His ability to dictate play and provide a creative spark makes him a valuable asset for any team, and Atalanta have successfully secured his services for the long term.
