Hamrun Spartans were eliminated from the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds following a 2-1 defeat to NSÍ Runavík, with a 92nd-minute penalty proving decisive in a 3-2 aggregate loss. The penalty was awarded after Hamrun captain Emerson Marcelina mistakenly believed the ball had gone out of play and returned it to the field, despite the referee not signalling for a goal kick.
According to reports, Marcelina collected the ball within his own penalty area, assuming it had crossed the line, and prepared to take a goal kick. NSÍ Runavík were then awarded a penalty when the referee, Peter Knudsen, determined no goal had been scored and play should continue. Knudsen converted the spot-kick, securing the victory for the Faroese side.
Replays appeared to show the ball may have indeed crossed the line before Marcelina’s intervention, leading to significant protests from the Hamrun players and staff. Following the final whistle, the referee and his officials required a police escort due to the volatile atmosphere, with Marcelina reportedly in tears on the pitch.
The defeat marks a disappointing end to Hamrun’s European campaign. The Spartans had previously enjoyed success in earlier qualifying rounds, defeating a Gibraltarian side, but ultimately fell short against NSÍ Runavík. Hamrun Spartans finished second in the Maltese Premier League last season, earning them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying stages. This elimination concludes their involvement in European competition for the current season, and represents a setback for Maltese football on the continental stage.
