Eintracht Frankfurt moved back into seventh place in the Bundesliga, albeit on goal difference, following a 1-1 draw away at Augsburg on Saturday. The point was enough for the hosts to mathematically confirm their Bundesliga status for next season after news filtered through of St. Pauli's defeat elsewhere. The match began with a tribute from Augsburg to their former goalkeeper Alex Manninger, who passed away this week at the age of 48.
Frankfurt's January signing Love Arrhov, making his first start, was a constant threat for the visitors and struck the woodwork in the first half. However, it was Augsburg who took the lead just before the interval. Another winter arrival, Michael Gregoritsch, hit the post, and the rebound fell kindly for Anton Kade to score. Frankfurt started the second half poorly when winger Ritsu Doan received a yellow card, his fifth of the season, ruling him out of next week's clash with HSV.
Despite that setback, Doan became the hero for Frankfurt, scoring the equalizer midway through the second half to secure a point for his side. Augsburg pushed for a late winner to end their three-game winless run at home, but Frankfurt goalkeeper Michael Zetterer produced a superb save to deny former Frankfurt player Marius Wolf. The result leaves Frankfurt in the final European qualification spot, pending Freiburg's result against Borussia Dortmund.
For Augsburg, the primary objective of the season has been achieved with survival confirmed. Their focus can now shift to planning for the next campaign. Frankfurt, meanwhile, will view this as a valuable point in their tight race for European football, though their position remains precarious. The suspension of the influential Doan for a key home fixture adds a complication to their final push for a top-seven finish.
