Barcelona are exploring a move for FC Porto defender Jakub Kiwior as they reassess their central defensive options, according to reports from Sport via Matteo Moretto. The potential shift in strategy comes amidst growing doubts from manager Hansi Flick regarding the pursuit of Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni.
Flick is seeking a central defender who seamlessly integrates into his preferred aggressive tactical system, and reportedly does not believe Bastoni is the ideal fit. Kiwior, who previously played for Arsenal, has been extensively scouted by Barcelona’s sporting director Deco in recent months, emerging as a more affordable alternative.
The Polish international fits the profile Barcelona are looking for – a left-sided central defender – and would represent a financially more manageable option for Deco, who faces the challenge of balancing multiple signings this summer to satisfy Flick’s squad requirements. While Barcelona acknowledge Kiwior’s potential, the club is currently prioritizing other areas of the squad.
Barcelona’s immediate focus is on finding a replacement for Robert Lewandowski, whose departure was recently confirmed. The club is concentrating its financial resources on securing a new number nine, with Julian Alvarez, Joao Pedro, and Harry Kane identified as leading candidates. A decision on a new central defender, including a definitive move for Kiwior, will be made after the striker search concludes.
Flick is aiming to build a squad capable of competing for the Champions League title, a trophy Barcelona last won in 2015. The summer transfer window is expected to be a busy one for the Catalan giants as they attempt to reshape the squad to meet the manager’s demands and return to European prominence.
