Barcelona aim to extend Pacifico loan despite defender's ACL injury
Barcelona are planning to extend the loan of young defender Patricio Pacifico despite the player suffering a serious knee injury that will keep him out for most of the next season, according to reports. The 20-year-old Uruguayan left-back, who joined on loan from Defensor Sporting in January, ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in a match for Barca Atletic last weekend and is expected to be sidelined for eight to nine months.
Despite the significant setback, Barcelona officials are keen to retain Pacifico for another season. According to Catalan outlet MD, the club has opened talks with Defensor Sporting regarding a loan extension. The primary motivation is to keep the player under the care of Barcelona's medical staff throughout his rehabilitation, a process familiar to the club after similar long-term injuries to players like Gavi and Andreas Christensen.
Pacifico had been impressing with the reserve side since his arrival, leading to internal discussions about making his move permanent. The ACL injury, which requires surgery once swelling subsides, had cast doubt on those plans. A loan extension would defer a permanent decision until Pacifico returns to fitness, which is projected for the start of 2027. This would give him the second half of the 2026-27 season to prove he can still perform at the required level.
The club hopes to finalize an agreement before the current season concludes. Sporting director Deco is leading the negotiations, which are not expected to face major obstacles. This approach allows Barcelona to maintain control over the player's development and recovery without committing a significant transfer fee while he is injured. For Defensor Sporting, it ensures their asset continues his rehabilitation at a top facility and retains or potentially increases his future market value.
Pacifico's situation highlights a recurring theme at Barcelona, where a commitment to nurturing young talent often extends through periods of adversity. The potential arrangement reflects a pragmatic, long-term strategy, betting on the player's full recovery and his previously demonstrated potential. His eventual return to action next year will be closely monitored, with his future at the Camp Nou likely depending on his form in the latter months of the 2027 campaign.
