FC Barcelona have made a formal offer for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, club president Joan Laporta has confirmed. The offer, submitted by sporting director Deco, comes as Barcelona seek to add attacking firepower to a squad already featuring Raphinha and emerging talent Lamine Yamal.
Laporta revealed the club’s interest in Álvarez dates back prior to the player’s move to Manchester City, suggesting a long-held ambition to bring the Argentinian international to the Camp Nou. Despite the initial offer being rejected by Atlético president Enrique Cerezo, Laporta has indicated Barcelona remain committed to pursuing the transfer.
“Deco formulated an offer for this player,” Laporta stated. “We know that he wanted to join Barça for a long time, even before his time at Manchester City. We made this offer with all humility to Atlético de Madrid.” He further emphasized the club’s resolve, stating the offer remains on the table and will be maintained “as long as necessary,” though Barcelona will not be dictated to by Atlético’s decision.
Álvarez, a World Cup winner with Argentina in 2022, has established himself as a key player for Atlético since joining the club. He has consistently featured in Diego Simeone’s starting eleven, contributing goals and assists in both La Liga and the Champions League. His versatility, capable of playing across the front line, would offer Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández tactical flexibility.
The pursuit of Álvarez highlights Barcelona’s continued efforts to bolster their squad despite ongoing financial challenges. While the exact fee of the offer remains undisclosed, securing Álvarez would represent a significant statement of intent from the Catalan club as they aim to compete at the highest level in both domestic and European competitions. The transfer could potentially reshape Barcelona’s attack, creating a formidable trio with Raphinha and Yamal.
