Barcelona have made a significant statement in the opening hours of the 2026 summer transfer window, completing the signing of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon for a reported €80 million. The move sees the England international join the Catalan giants as they look to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.
Gordon, 23, enjoyed a productive campaign with Newcastle, contributing significantly to their Champions League qualification. He scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in the Premier League, establishing himself as a key player under Eddie Howe. Barcelona have been long-time admirers of the winger, recognising his pace, dribbling ability, and potential for further development.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid have also been active, securing the services of Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva on a free transfer. The Portuguese international has been a mainstay in City’s midfield for several years, winning multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League. His arrival at the Santiago Bernabéu adds experience and quality to Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.
Real Madrid also confirmed the signing of Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella for a fee of €55 million, and have added Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate on a free transfer. Further bolstering their ranks, the club anticipates the arrival of Denzel Dumfries following the conclusion of the World Cup, with Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez also a potential target.
In the Premier League, Tottenham Hotspur have been particularly busy, acquiring Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jan Paul van Hecke for €60 million, alongside free transfers for Andrew Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Martin Dubravka. Liverpool have moved to replace Konate by signing Stade Rennais centre-back Jeremy Jacquet for €63.6 million. Chelsea have also been active, bringing in Geovany Quenda, Denner, Dastan Satpaev, Emmanuel Emegha and Marco Palestra, with Valentin Barco from Strasbourg expected to follow.
Manchester City have agreed a club-record fee for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, while Arsenal are reportedly leading the chase for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers. However, Liverpool are expected to miss out on Yan Diomande, who is set to join Paris Saint-Germain.
These early moves indicate a busy summer transfer window across Europe’s top five leagues, with clubs eager to strengthen their squads before the start of the new season. The significant investment by Barcelona in Gordon signals their ambition to compete at the highest level, while Real Madrid’s acquisitions demonstrate their continued commitment to building a world-class team.
