Barcelona have been presented with the opportunity to sign Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana this summer, as reported by Spanish publication SPORT. The offer comes as Barcelona explore options to strengthen their centre-back position ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni currently identified as their primary target.
Barcelona are reportedly prioritising a left-sided centre-back to allow teenage defender Pau Cubarsi to feature in his preferred role on the right side of defence under manager Hansi Flick. However, SPORT notes that securing Bastoni may prove difficult due to his reported €80million (£69.2m) price tag, potentially exceeding Barcelona’s budgetary constraints.
According to Sky Sports, as cited by SPORT, representatives of Fofana have contacted Barcelona sporting director Deco to propose a permanent transfer for a reported fee of €30m (£26m). While Barcelona are considering the offer as a potentially “very advantageous” opportunity, they are currently leaning towards a loan deal should they decide to pursue the move further.
Fofana joined Chelsea from Leicester City in August 2022 for an initial €81m (£70m), signing a seven-year contract. The 25-year-old has faced challenges with injuries during his time at Stamford Bridge, limiting him to 68 appearances in four seasons. However, the current season has been his most productive, with 34 appearances across all competitions.
Despite his increased playing time this season, Fofana was an unused substitute in Chelsea’s recent 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, a result that all but confirms the club will miss out on Champions League qualification. Chelsea are currently ninth in the Premier League table and are searching for a new permanent manager following the departure of Calum McFarlane. Barcelona, meanwhile, are on the verge of winning La Liga, needing only to avoid defeat against Real Madrid in their upcoming Clasico match.
Given Barcelona’s reported preference for a left-sided defender, a move for Fofana, who typically plays on the right, may not directly address their immediate needs. However, his availability at a significantly lower price point than Bastoni could present a tempting alternative for the Catalan club.
