Chelsea are nearing an agreement to sign Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix for a fee of €70 million (£60m), according to reports. The 26-year-old has been identified as a priority target by Chelsea as they prepare for Xabi Alonso’s first season as manager.
Lacroix has impressed during his two seasons with Crystal Palace, establishing himself as a key figure in the team’s defence. However, following the departure of Oliver Glasner, he is reportedly open to a move, with Chelsea emerging as the frontrunners for his signature despite interest from Arsenal. The potential arrival of Lacroix could signal a significant overhaul of Chelsea’s defensive options.
The Blues are anticipating several departures in defence this summer, with Trevoh Chalobah, Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, and potentially Wesley Fofana all expected to be sold. Lacroix is considered the preferred replacement, ahead of other targets such as Jacobo Ramon and John Stones. This suggests Alonso is keen to reshape the backline with a player he believes fits his tactical system.
Discussions between the clubs have been ongoing for several weeks, culminating in a formal meeting between Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish in New York following the World Cup final. The Daily Mail reports that Chelsea initially offered €65m, but Palace are holding firm at their €70m valuation. An agreement is believed to be close, with both clubs hoping to finalise the transfer before the start of the 2026-27 campaign.
Lacroix, who made three appearances for France at the World Cup, is understood to be receptive to a move to Stamford Bridge. Beyond Lacroix, Chelsea are also pursuing Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria, although negotiations are currently stalled due to a significant difference in valuation. Rayo Vallecano are demanding Chavarria’s €50m release clause be met, a figure Chelsea are currently unwilling to pay. Should the Chavarria deal collapse, Chelsea may revisit a move for Lewis Hall. The club has already secured a deal with Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers, who will become their most expensive signing in history.
