Chelsea have made an initial approach to former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez regarding their upcoming managerial vacancy, according to reports from Ben Jacobs. Hernandez’s camp have indicated the Catalan coach is open to a move to the Premier League, however, Chelsea are not expected to pursue further talks at this stage.
Xavi has been out of work since leaving Barcelona at the end of the 2023-24 season, a spell that saw him win a La Liga title and a Spanish Supercup. His departure from the club was turbulent, initially announcing his resignation before reversing his decision, and ultimately being sacked less than a month later. Since then, he has been linked with several high-profile positions, including Manchester United and the Morocco national team, but has not returned to management.
Chelsea are currently searching for a new manager following the end of the season, and are considering a number of candidates. Xabi Alonso, currently managing Real Madrid, and Andoni Iraola, who is set to leave Bournemouth this summer, are both under serious consideration for the role. Iraola’s future at Bournemouth has been resolved, despite previous links to Athletic Club, with Edin Terzic appointed as the new manager.
Alonso’s reputation remains high within the game, having previously been approached by Liverpool before taking charge at Real Madrid. He is expected to have numerous opportunities when he decides to leave his current position, and Chelsea represent a potential destination. The former Spain international’s success at Real Madrid has further enhanced his standing as one of Europe’s most sought-after managers.
For Xavi, a move to the Premier League would represent a new challenge after a largely successful but ultimately fraught period at Barcelona. While Chelsea’s initial interest is encouraging, the club’s focus appears to be elsewhere, leaving Xavi continuing his search for a return to management.
