Borussia Dortmund are weighing up withdrawing from the race to sign Hertha BSC’s 16-year-old forward Kennet Eichhorn, according to Sport Bild, due to demands for a substantial signing bonus that could bring the total cost of the transfer to €20 million.
Eichhorn has been the subject of widespread speculation regarding his future, with numerous clubs across Germany and Europe reportedly monitoring the promising teenager. The player possesses a reported release clause of between €10-12 million, though Bundesliga clubs are believed to be able to secure his services for around €9 million, and potentially even less for those not competing in the Champions League.
Despite the relatively modest release clause, the overall expense of the deal is proving to be a stumbling block for Dortmund. Eichhorn and his representatives are reportedly seeking a signing bonus of approximately €10 million, taking the total package to €20 million. The player’s camp reportedly justifies this demand, citing an estimated market value of €20 million and arguing the overall cost is commensurate with his potential.
This has led to Dortmund reconsidering their position, with club officials apparently deeming the financial demands excessive. The Black and Yellows are known for developing young talent, but are seemingly unwilling to meet the financial expectations set by Eichhorn’s representatives.
Other clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, and Liverpool, remain interested in the player and are not reportedly phased by the €20 million package. However, a move to the Premier League presents unique challenges for Eichhorn. Post-Brexit regulations prevent players under 18 from registering for English clubs, meaning any transfer to Liverpool would likely necessitate an immediate loan spell away from England to ensure the player continues his development.
Eichhorn has yet to make a significant breakthrough into the Hertha BSC first team, but is highly regarded within the club’s academy. A move to a top club would provide him with a platform to further hone his skills and potentially become a key player in the future. The outcome of Dortmund’s deliberations could significantly impact the competition for his signature and ultimately determine his next destination.
