Fulham are nearing an agreement to appoint Alvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach following advanced discussions with the former Real Madrid manager, TEAMtalk reports. Sources in Spain have confirmed that Arbeloa is prepared to return to England to begin the next phase of his coaching career.
The 43-year-old is now considered the leading candidate to succeed Marco Silva at Fulham, with talks progressing positively between all parties involved. Should a deal be finalized, Arbeloa would return to London almost a decade after his playing career concluded with West Ham United in 2017.
Arbeloa is well known to English football fans for his time at Liverpool between 2007 and 2009, but he spent the majority of his playing days with Real Madrid. At Madrid, he established himself as a decorated defender, winning numerous major honors and becoming a prominent figure for Spain’s national team.
Arbeloa’s coaching career has mirrored his playing success, steadily progressing through Real Madrid’s coaching structure over the past six years. He has earned a reputation as one of the club’s most promising young managers, recently stepping up to take charge of the team following Xabi Alonso’s departure, in addition to previous roles within the academy and with Castilla.
Despite efforts from new Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho and club president Florentino Perez to retain Arbeloa at the Estadio Bernabeu, sources indicate that the Spaniard is eager to take on his first senior managerial position outside of Spain and test himself in a competitive European league.
Fulham’s search for Silva’s replacement has been thorough, with the club considering several other candidates, including Thomas Frank, Ruben Amorim, and Arne Slot. Discussions were held with Frank, while Amorim was also evaluated before ultimately ruling himself out of contention. Ange Postecoglou was interviewed, and Kieran McKenna and Frank Lampard were also assessed as potential options.
However, Arbeloa has emerged as the preferred candidate, impressing Fulham officials with his coaching credentials and development work at Madrid. His understanding of elite-level football is also seen as a significant asset. Fulham believe he can build upon Silva’s foundations while introducing fresh ideas and a long-term vision for the club. While an agreement is not yet complete, negotiations are reportedly progressing well, and Arbeloa is firmly positioned as Fulham’s leading choice.
