AC Milan's Rafael Leao faces uncertain future after fan fallout
Rafael Leao's future at AC Milan is under intense scrutiny following a significant deterioration in his relationship with the club's supporters, casting serious doubt on his long-term future at San Siro. The Portuguese forward was subjected to a torrent of whistles and jeers from the home crowd during and after his substitution in the recent match against Udinese, a clear sign of a fractured relationship.
The 24-year-old, once the darling of the San Siro, has endured a difficult season. His performance against Udinese, where he was largely ineffective in an unfamiliar central striker role before being moved back to his preferred left-wing position, encapsulated a campaign of struggle. The Portuguese international has managed only 10 goals this season, his lowest tally since the 2021-22 season, a significant drop for a player who was the Serie A MVP just two seasons ago.
According to reports from Italy, the rift extends beyond the stands. The club is reportedly unhappy with Leao's conduct, both on and off the pitch. A notable incident occurred on March 15th during a match against Lazio, where Leao reacted poorly to being substituted, directing his frustration at teammate Christian Pulisic and manager Massimiliano Allegri. This, combined with other unspecified behavioral issues at the training ground, has led the club to put all talks of a contract extension on hold. His current deal expires in 2028, but discussions over an improved deal have been frozen.
The player's form has been hampered by persistent physical issues. Since suffering an adductor injury in December, followed by an ongoing groin problem, Leao has struggled for full fitness and explosive sharpness, the very attributes that define his game. Manager Max Allegri's tactical shift to a 3-5-2 formation has also been cited as a factor, with the system not playing to Leao's traditional strengths as a left-winger.
Financially, a summer transfer appears the most likely outcome, though his market value has diminished. In 2022, Milan reportedly rejected an offer worth nearly €100 million from Chelsea. Current estimates suggest a fee in the region of €50 million would now be required to secure his signature, with Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Premier League clubs previously linked. His performance at the upcoming FIFA World Cup could be pivotal, either reviving his market value or diminishing it further.
For Milan, the situation presents a major challenge for Allegri, who must now manage a fractured dressing room and a star player who appears disconnected from the fans. The club's immediate focus is securing Champions League qualification, but the future of their once-undisputed star is now one of the most pressing and uncertain issues at the club.
