Galatasaray has emerged as the most interested club in signing Rafael Leão from Milan, initiating a negotiation expected to be complex and drawn out. According to reports from Italy, the Turkish club is prepared to offer Leão a contract worth €10 million per season plus bonuses, a significant increase from his current €5.5 million plus bonuses at Milan.
Leão recently expressed a desire for a “new challenge” in a different league while on international duty with Portugal, following a difficult season hampered by a pubalgia injury that impacted his form and playing time. The forward, who was named Serie A’s MVP four years ago, reportedly feels a change of scenery could be beneficial. Galatasaray’s appeal lies in their ambition, history of signing quality attackers from the Italian league – including Mauro Icardi and Victor Osimhen – and their capacity to offer substantial contracts.
However, the transfer is unlikely to materialize imminently. Milan is currently in a period of transition, searching for both a new head coach and a sporting director, making decisive actions on player transfers difficult. Furthermore, Galatasaray’s squad registration is currently full, with their quota of 14 foreign players already met – 10 without age restrictions and 4 under 23. The club must first sell players to create space for new signings.
Leão’s current valuation is estimated to be around €40 million, but this figure could fluctuate depending on whether other clubs enter the bidding. If Galatasaray remains the sole serious contender, they will be in a stronger negotiating position with Milan. The situation is expected to develop further after the World Cup, likely in July or August, as Galatasaray works to free up roster space and Milan solidifies its leadership structure. This transfer could signal a shift in Leão’s career, potentially opening a new chapter in Turkish football.
