Milan are set to lose Alessandro Longoni, a goalkeeper born in 2008, on a free transfer this summer. The potential destination of Paris Saint-Germain has raised concerns among Milan supporters, questioning the club’s decision to let a highly-rated young talent depart without a fee. The situation stems from decisions made over the past year regarding the club’s youth goalkeeping hierarchy.
Longoni has been a part of the Milan youth system for the majority of his career, hailing from Como. A significant moment in his young career came in 2024 when he won the Under-17 European Championship with Italy, starting in two group stage matches and the quarter-final against England – a game decided by penalties and featuring a crucial goal from teammate Liberali.
The turning point in Longoni’s Milan career arrived last summer when the club, under the direction of sporting director Tare, decided to prioritize Matteo Pittarella, another goalkeeper born in 2008. Pittarella had previously served as Longoni’s backup during the 2024-25 season. Pittarella was subsequently included in the first-team tour, alongside experienced goalkeepers Maignan, Terracciano, and Torriani, and established himself within the setup. He rotated between the first team and Milan Futuro throughout the year.
Longoni, meanwhile, primarily featured for the Primavera team and occasionally found himself on the bench for Serie D matches. Milan’s technical staff believed Pittarella and Torriani possessed greater potential for development. Longoni reportedly disagreed with this assessment and, after making demands the club deemed excessive, did not renew his contract, which expires in June. Milan may regret not securing an earlier contract extension during the spring of 2025.
Currently, Longoni’s future remains uncertain, with interest from both Manchester City and PSG. PSG already has an Italian-born goalkeeper in Renato Marin, who has made two Ligue 1 appearances this season, having previously been in Roma’s youth system. The situation in Paris is evolving, as current backup goalkeeper Chevalier is likely to depart, creating a potential opening. It remains to be seen whether Marin or Longoni will fill that role.
