Genoa have finalized the permanent transfer of 19-year-old midfielder Alexsandro Amorim from Portuguese side Alverca for a fee approaching ten million euros. The move, completed in January, sees the Brazilian-born player join the Rossoblù with high expectations.
Amorim’s path to Genoa began at Fortaleza in Brazil, followed by a brief spell at Athletic before his development continued at Alverca, where he was scouted by Genoa’s CFO, Diego Lopez. Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino reportedly expressed his belief that Amorim will remain at the club for a significant period, stating, “He’ll stay for five years, not five months.”
Speaking about his adaptation to Italian football, Amorim noted the differences in tactical approach. “I found a different way to play football,” he said. “But it was a very positive impact. I arrived in Italy where they play a different football, with different intensity, with man-marking, and I had never played like this before.” He credited the coaching staff and his new teammates with helping him quickly adjust to the more demanding style.
Amorim expressed his excitement about joining a historic club like Genoa, emphasizing the appeal of the project presented to him by Gilardino and Lopez. He was particularly impressed by the passion of the club’s supporters, stating that playing in front of the Genoa fans was a long-held dream. He also highlighted the importance of the club sending representatives to Portugal to secure his signature, demonstrating their strong desire to bring him to Italy.
The young midfielder described himself as a player who prioritizes the team and is willing to fulfill any role requested by the coach. He believes his key strengths lie in his technical ability, enjoyment of possession, and willingness to make forward runs. Amorim also expressed his ambition to represent his country at the international level, believing that his development in Serie A will increase his chances of achieving that goal. He also spoke highly of the opportunity to learn from a World Cup-winning coach in Gilardino, saying it was “incredible” to have such a figure guiding his career.
Amorim’s arrival is intended to add quality and creativity to Genoa’s midfield as they aim to solidify their position in Serie A.
