TSG Hoffenheim are currently leading the pursuit of VfL Wolfsburg winger Patrick Wimmer, according to Sky Germany. The 25-year-old Austrian international is expected to leave Wolfsburg following their relegation from the Bundesliga, and discussions between Hoffenheim and the player’s representatives are reportedly progressing well. Eintracht Frankfurt and Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion have also registered interest in Wimmer, but Hoffenheim are presently considered the frontrunners.
Wimmer joined Wolfsburg from Austria Wien in the summer of 2021, quickly establishing himself as a regular in the team. He has made 66 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists. However, his impact wasn’t enough to prevent Wolfsburg’s disappointing season and subsequent relegation via the promotion/relegation play-off against Hamburg.
Wolfsburg’s relegation has activated a release clause in Wimmer’s contract, making him available for a fee of €10 million. This relatively affordable price tag has attracted attention from several clubs, but Hoffenheim’s proactive approach has placed them in a strong position. The club are looking to strengthen their attacking options ahead of next season, and Wimmer’s pace and direct running style would likely suit their system.
Wimmer has also been named in Austria’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, providing him with a platform to further showcase his abilities. He has earned 15 caps for his country, scoring three goals. A move to Hoffenheim would allow him to remain in the Bundesliga, a league he is familiar with, and continue his development as a player.
Should Hoffenheim successfully complete the transfer, it would represent a significant coup for the club, adding a proven Bundesliga performer to their ranks. For Wimmer, it offers the opportunity to rebuild his career following Wolfsburg’s relegation and continue playing at a high level.
