- FC Köln have confirmed the signing of Gideon Mensah on a free transfer from French Ligue 1 side AJ Auxerre. The 27-year-old Ghana international has agreed to a two-year contract with the Bundesliga club, strengthening their options at left-back.
According to 1. FC Köln managing director Thomas Kessler, the club had been monitoring Mensah for some time and were impressed by his performances both in France and during the recent World Cup. Kessler highlighted Mensah’s tactical discipline, defensive capabilities, and dynamic play as key attributes that will enhance the squad’s stability and quality. He emphasized that Mensah prioritizes the team and will add valuable experience to the Köln defense.
Mensah himself stated that he received multiple offers following his participation in the World Cup with Ghana, but ultimately chose Köln due to the club’s clear interest and the sporting vision presented to him. He also expressed excitement about playing in front of the passionate Köln supporters, having heard positive reports about the atmosphere at the RheinEnergieStadion. Mensah affirmed his commitment to giving his all for the club and contributing to team success.
Mensah joined AJ Auxerre in August 2022, making 26 appearances across all competitions for the club last season. Prior to his time in France, he spent a season on loan at Bordeaux from Red Bull Salzburg, and also had a loan spell with Vitória de Guimarães in Portugal. He has earned 18 caps for the Ghana national team, featuring in all three of their group stage matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The arrival of Mensah provides competition for existing left-back options at Köln, potentially challenging for a starting role under head coach Steffen Baumgart. The free transfer represents a shrewd piece of business for Köln, adding an experienced international player without incurring a transfer fee, and bolstering their defensive options ahead of the new Bundesliga season.
