The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is still awaiting a decision from Paolo Maldini regarding the position of technical director, despite president Giovanni Malagò’s aim to finalize the appointment by the weekend, according to reports in Italy. While Malagò has indicated consideration of ‘Plan B’ and ‘Plan C’ options, Maldini remains the primary target.
The situation is unfolding with less than three weeks before an anticipated election within the FIGC, and Maldini has yet to formally accept the role. Other national federations facing similar leadership vacancies have reportedly reached decisions more swiftly, such as Portugal’s appointment of Jorge Jesus and Germany’s pursuit of Jurgen Klopp following Julian Nagelsmann’s dismissal. Comparisons have been drawn to Carlo Ancelotti, seen as the Italian equivalent of Klopp, though his current commitments complicate a potential move.
Maldini is being offered a dual role encompassing technical director and president of Club Italia, providing significant autonomy and the flexibility to balance commitments. Malagò reportedly issued something of an ultimatum last week, suggesting Sunday could be a decisive day. Beyond the immediate need, the FIGC is also focused on preparations for Euro 2032, a project considered equally, if not more, challenging than qualifying for future World Cups.
Should Maldini decline, Claudio Ranieri is being considered as a potential alternative, also for a dual role. Other names circulating include Beppe Bergomi, Demetrio Albertini, and Alessandro Costacurta, though these candidates would likely be paired with a dedicated technical director, a position for which Frederic Massara, now at Juventus, was previously well-regarded. Giorgio Chiellini and Gianfranco Zola are also considered, but are currently content in their existing roles with Juventus and Lega Pro respectively.
The appointment of the technical director will then pave the way for selecting a new national team coach, with Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini emerging as frontrunners. Malagò reportedly favors Mancini, but Mancini’s potential appointment faces resistance from Serie A clubs, who are scheduled to discuss financial and player availability contributions to the national team’s new direction on July 23rd, a proposal led by Beppe Marotta. This club opposition is a significant factor in the ongoing deliberations.
