Leeds United have signed Sassuolo defender Tarik Muharemovic in a deal reportedly worth €40 million, the club confirmed on Friday. The Bosnian international has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League side, arriving after a breakthrough season in Serie A and a notable appearance at the recent World Cup. The transfer represents a significant investment for Leeds as they look to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Muharemovic, 23, established himself as a key player for Sassuolo last season, making 32 appearances across all competitions and featuring as one of the team’s most frequently used outfield players. He joined Sassuolo from Juventus in the summer of 2025, though he never made a first-team appearance for the Turin club. His performances for the Neroverdi earned him regular call-ups to the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team, where he has now accumulated 17 caps.
The defender’s World Cup campaign drew attention, with Bosnia and Herzegovina reaching the last 16 of the tournament. Muharemovic was also involved in a controversial incident during the competition, drawing a foul that resulted in a red card for USA forward Folarin Balogun, though the suspension was later overturned. This exposure likely contributed to the increased interest from clubs across Europe.
Leeds have been actively seeking to bolster their squad following a period of transition, and Muharemovic’s arrival addresses a need for defensive reinforcement. The significant fee paid for the player demonstrates the club’s ambition and willingness to invest in quality talent. The move provides Muharemovic with the opportunity to test himself in the highly competitive Premier League, and his addition could prove vital as Leeds aim to establish themselves as a consistent force in the top flight.
