RC Lens are poised to appoint Dino Toppmöller as their new manager, according to L’Équipe. The 45-year-old German coach has emerged as the preferred candidate following the departure of Pierre Sage to Crystal Palace, with discussions reaching an advanced stage as of Friday.
Toppmöller most recently managed Eintracht Frankfurt, where he spent two years developing a reputation for nurturing young talent and implementing an intense style of play. While his time in Frankfurt concluded with a dismissal in January after a difficult six-month period, he previously oversaw a successful period with the club, and his overall CV impressed Lens officials. He was an assistant coach to Julian Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich between 2021 and 2023, where he was known for his close relationships with French players and proactive approach to player management.
During his tenure at Frankfurt, Toppmöller was instrumental in the development of players such as Randal Kolo Muani, Hugo Ekitike, Jesper Lindström, Willian Pacho, and Omar Marmoush, all of whom have since moved to prominent clubs. He has long been an admirer of French football and its players, a factor that appealed to Lens’ sporting director Jean-Louis Leca during the recruitment process. Leca was reportedly immediately impressed by Toppmöller’s technical understanding and experience.
Lens reportedly engaged in some tactical negotiation during discussions, but a formal proposal was presented to Toppmöller on Friday. While financial details are still being finalized, Toppmöller is expected to accept a salary lower than what he earned at Frankfurt. Other clubs, including Nice, Feyenoord, and AC Milan, had also expressed interest in the German coach, but Lens ultimately proved to be the most appealing destination. Milan ultimately pursued Oliver Glasner instead. The appointment signals a clear statement of ambition from Lens, who faced recent criticism for a perceived lack of investment ahead of their Champions League campaign. Toppmöller’s arrival suggests the club is committed to maintaining a progressive and attacking identity.
