Bayer Leverkusen are planning to sell at least one of their central midfielders during the upcoming summer transfer window, according to a report from Kicker.de. The Bundesliga champions currently have four options in defensive midfield, and the club is expected to streamline the squad ahead of the 2026-27 season.
While Exequiel Palacios is considered the most secure starter in that position, his compatriot Equi Fernández is currently the most likely candidate to depart. Fernández’s recent behaviour has reportedly impacted his standing with the club, after he refused a late substitution in a recent match against Borussia Dortmund. The incident, intended to waste time during the 1-0 victory, has jeopardised his position within the team.
Aleix Garcia is also a potential departure, though Leverkusen are expected to only consider offers for the Spaniard if they are particularly financially attractive. Garcia has been a key component of Xabi Alonso’s midfield, contributing to their title-winning campaign, and the club would be reluctant to lose him without a significant return.
Malik Tillman’s future at the BayArena is also uncertain. The USA international was reportedly seeking an exit under previous manager Xabi Alonso, and it remains to be seen how his situation will evolve under new head coach Gerardo Martinez. Premier League side Fulham have expressed interest in Tillman, and Leverkusen are open to a sale if their valuation is met. Tillman joined Leverkusen in 2023 from Rangers, and has featured sporadically for the club.
The potential sale of one or more midfielders would allow Leverkusen to reinvest in other areas of the squad as they prepare to compete in the Champions League next season. The club’s success this season has increased their profile, and they are likely to face increased competition for players. A reshuffle in midfield could allow them to bring in fresh talent and maintain their competitive edge.
